Orfeo, Toccata

Claudio MONTEVERDI

1567-1643

Our musical journey begins at one of the earliest meeting points between theatre and Western music— Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, which premiered in 1607, was one of the first operas. We will hear the “Toccata,” an orchestral introduction originally played by the entire orchestra before the curtain rises. Over 400 years ago, this melody was a major turning point, introducing a new art form. Today, it signals the beginning of an innovative and groundbreaking project: Eternal Orlando.
