Emotion and even laughter will be sparked while listening to composer Anders Hillborg’s Clarinet Concerto “Peacock Tales”, here performed with sublime theatricality by David Dias da Silva. Dancing, magical and enchanting in equal measure, the overture and scherzo from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream bring out all the intrigue, excitement and touching qualities found in Shakespeare’s work. Gloomy and cold, the tragedy Macbeth reveals the utter darkness of the human soul, which also inspires Strauss’s symphonic poem, a brooding work marked by melodic lines that go straight to the heart. Tchaikovsky’s famous Romeo and Juliet completes this concert conducted by Alexander Shelley, music director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa.
