Military rhythms and unprecedented scale, the piano freely expressing notions of grandeur and eliciting an enthusiastic response from the orchestra: these are surely what has earned Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 the nickname “Emperor.” To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth, soloist in residence Nicholas Angelich will offer his interpretation of this legendary work. Conducted by the young and energetic Elim Chan, the concert also features Flammenschrift, French composer Guillaume Connesson’s explosive homage to Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss and German music. Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 pushes the limits of the genre. Played without a break, its four interwoven movements are reminiscent of a fantasia.
