Of all films based on Shakespeare, the one that has left the strongest impression is undoubtedly Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (1968), notably enhanced by Laurence Olivier’s narration. Nino Rota’s sublime score, especially its tender and melancholic love theme (which briefly dethroned the Beatles at the top of the Billboard charts!), remains one of the most sensual ever composed for the young star-crossed lovers. “A Renaissance Time Piece” traces the development of their love, from their first meeting to its blossoming in the famous balcony scene, where the theme reaches its climax.
